To the crew of a U.S. P-3C Orion antisubmarine plane circling overhead, substantial damage was clearly visible. The sub was venting smoke from a gaping hole behind its sail, or vertical superstructure, where a hatch covering one of the 16 missile-launching tubes had been located. Said Defense Department Spokesman Commander Robert Prucha after examining photos: "The hatch was peeled back like a sardine can." But when the nearby U.S. oceangoing tug Powhatan offered assistance, the sub declined, requesting that the tug "stand clear."
For three days, though apparently taking in water, the stricken sub managed to stay afloat, limping eastward under its own power before accepting a tow from one of several Soviet merchant ships that had arrived on the scene. Then, early last week, the towline was disconnected, and the remaining 120 crew members were evacuated under the glare of red and green safety flares. The 9,600-ton sub disappeared under the waves, sinking some 18,000 ft. to the bottom.
As it turned out, there were few parallels with last spring's disaster at Chernobyl. For one thing, Mikhail Gorbachev notified Ronald Reagan of the accident the day after it happened, winning praise from the President and the State Department for his candor. More important, Soviet officials announced that there was no danger of radioactive contamination of the environment--a claim quickly supported by U.S. experts, who took samplings of air and water around the site.
Although the Soviets did not reveal what caused the explosion, it was apparently the highly volatile liquid fuel of the SS-N-6's. The fuel is "some kind of propellant combined with liquid oxygen," says Lieut. General Richard Burpee, director for operations of the Joint Staff. "Those will ignite on contact with each other, so you have to keep them separate. Handling those two fuels in the same missile is not without its hazards." Because of the danger, liquid-fueled missiles are carried only on older Soviet subs like the Yankee I class, which went into service between 1967 and 1974; the ballistic missiles on U.S. and latest Soviet subs are powered by solid fuel, which is far more stable.
Experts were quick to allay any public concern that such an accident might set off the missile warheads. A nuclear device, unlike older conventional explosives, cannot be detonated simply by a physical shock. The fission and then fusion reactions that must occur to explode an H-bomb can take place only if the weapon is armed electronically, which cannot happen accidentally. The warheads in the damaged tube "were obviously blown apart in the force of the explosion," says Vice Admiral Powell Carter Jr., director of the Joint Staff. Whether their remnants burned up or sank to the bottom of the ocean, they pose no danger; undetonated warheads contain only a small amount of radioactive material.
The sub's twin reactors, on the other hand, are filled with highly radioactive material, but the Navy believes their design minimizes the danger of environmental release. First of all, the nuclear fuel inside the reactors is bound to fuel plates, which are made of corrosion-resistant material that Carter says deteriorates "very, very slowly, even in seawater, at a rate of a fraction of a millimeter per thousand years."

More important, even though Soviet nuclear subs are believed to have less shielding around their reactor cores than their U.S. counterparts (making them lighter and faster), that shielding is substantial. The radioactive material, Carter says, is contained in a "massive and heavy stainless-steel, corrosion-proof reactor vessel," which under normal operation is pressurized and filled with water. Unlike air-filled compartments in a sinking ship, it will not crush under the pressures of the deep.
"You essentially not only have the fuel bound into these plates," says Carter, "but they're in a little vault of their own inside this huge reactor vessel, which would take forever to corrode through. It's possible it could crack or rupture, but even if it did . . . this material is still tightly bound into the fuel plates, so . . . nothing would happen."
Carter's confidence is based on more than speculation. The U.S. has lost two nuclear submarines, the Thresher in 1963 and the Scorpion in 1968. Since then the Navy has periodically taken ocean-bottom, marine-life and water samples in the areas where the craft went down. Says Carter: "We've never had any detectable increase over the normal background radiation in that part of the world. We expect this to be the same."
Though both the U.S. and the Soviet Union have submersibles that can operate at an 18,000-ft. depth, Burpee believes no effort will be made to recover the remains of the sub. The U.S. could learn little from the design of the vessel, and the Soviets had ample time to remove or destroy any sensitive documents and equipment. Says Burpee about recovering it: "That's a Soviet responsibility." Anyway, says Carter, "it would be quite a feat. I don't think you could do it." --By Michael D. Lemonick. Hey guys I put all of the previous episodes of Shippuuden on a MegaUpload account so you guys can download it if you missed a certain episode. They aren't put directly on our server because we don't want it to kill the speeds for people downloading the newer episodes, which have higher priority. Make sure to read all the instructions before downloading.We'll also be revamping the music videos sections soon. You can expect some more music videos. Also instead of having only the option to download a low quality version, we will be putting them so they can be watched online and downloaded for a second option.We're in the process of fixing the flash movies. I've contacted the creators of Naruto fan flash, and once their staff get back from out of the country, all issues regarding those videos will be resolved.Keep on checking back for more updates to the site. We'll be adding the online manga viewer really soon too!

The new Naruto chapter is out for download. There was no release last week incase you didn't know. I know many of you were very anxious last week so we made a concerted effort to release this chapter before any other website. I would like to thank NinjaBuzz for getting it done so quickly. Also I want you guys to know we're working on a manga viewer to put on the site so instead of downloading, you guys can also just view it online.

You can check his site out to read manga.The new episode titled "Between Life and Death in Three Minutes" has been released by DB. It is now available for direct download if you are a Gold member.The episode is now available for the public to download. It has been converted into a smaller RMVB format.In the next few weeks we'll be adding a lot of new features to the site. I'm really trying to put out a lot of things before school gets started and time starts running short. For those who didn't realize it when we didn't put the manga up for 4 days past its normal release date, there was no manga release last week. There should be one this week so stay tuned.As for movie 4 news. The movie comes out very soon, but in Japanese theaters online. We do not anticipate to have the download available until the DVD is released, which will be in April of next year.

Hey guys, I'm finally back from my vacation. I made a few updates to the site. First off I added some more downloads to the Gold members section. Some of the files were not up-to-date since I was away. If you want to sign up to get the site ad-free and also tons of new downloads, it is only $5 a month.The new prize for this month's drawing has been put up. You can go join the drawing anytime you want. We'll be working on getting a much bigger prize in the coming months.I will be informing you all who the winner of the caption contest is in a few days. I have to go through a few thousand submissions which is not easy at all. I've narrowed it down to a few hundred, but there is still a lot of work to be done.I've been getting a lot of submitted content recently and I'm working at putting them all up. I have to always check the grammar and such so it takes awhile.Episode 24 should be released later tonight so stay tuned!

Sorry for the slight delay. I'm in California right now, and I wasn't able to get online until a few minutes ago. Anyways the new episode is out for Gold download members. It is a double episode so you guys get twice the dosing. The public download is now available, with multiple mirrors for faster downloading.

This year marks our 24th-annual 10Best Cars competition, and we've conducted the past 20 or so of these events at the same rural site about 30 miles west of our home office in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Over the years we've grown used to seeing camouflaged new models and convoys of competitive vehicle sets cruising around on these roads. But during this year's test week, we saw something new.
In two different locations, half of the two-lane country road was blocked off for a few hundred yards. Within the coned-off area, technicians from an unknown Japanese car company were using sophisticated instruments to measure the road surface so they could build a duplicate section of that pavement at their home proving grounds.

We've always known that these roads, with their combination of heavy crowns and less-than-glassy-smooth pavement arranged in variegated twists and turns, provide a challenging test of any vehicle's road manners and control responses, but it's nice to see others have independently come to the same conclusion.
Having such demanding roads is tremendously helpful to us because the task of winnowing the 10Best Cars from the dozens of terrific new models remains as tough as ever.
For 2006, we were presented with a brace of affordable roadsters in the form of an all-new Mazda MX-5 and the eagerly awaited Pontiac Solstice. The new Ford Fusion and the comprehensively redesigned Hyundai Sonata and Volkswagen Passat took on the returning 19-time 10Best-winning Honda Accord, which came reinforced with a fresh face lift.
It was also a big year for V-8 sedans from Detroit, with the new Buick Lucerne, the Cadillac DTS, the Dodge Charger, which is already available with the high-output Hemi in SRT8 guise, and the Chevy Impala SS and Pontiac Grand Prix GXP, which are now available with the latest iteration of the venerable small-block Chevy V-8, complete with cylinder-shutdown systems.
Our rules for inclusion in the 2006 10Best competition are essentially unchanged from last year's. We automatically invite the 2005 winners back and sift through our automotive database to identify other cars that are all-new or significantly upgraded for 2006. Cars we've considered in previous years don't get invited back until they meet our redesign threshold.
Otherwise, all nominees must also have a base price no higher than $71,000. This is 2.5 times the average new-vehicle transaction price as of August 2005. Eligible cars must also be promised for sale no later than January 2006, and the manufacturer must deliver an example to us for our evaluations. Vaporware, in other words, need not apply.

Les nageuses doivent être synchronisées dans leurs mouvements et avec la musique, et elles doivent se ressembler le plus possible : même maillot, même coiffure, mêmes mouvements... Le terme "ballet nautique" est parfois utilisé, notamment lors des spectacles.Pour les compétitions, il existe principalement trois types de formations : le solo, le duo et le ballet d'équipe (à huit). Il existe des programmes libres, dont la durée est imposée, et des programmes techniques, plus courts, qui doivent comporter des éléments techniques exécutés dans un ordre imposé. Les figures imposées sont un ensemble de positions et de transitions réalisées sans musique et de manière statique devant un jury. Elles sont regroupées par catégorie avec un coefficent de difficulté permettant leur notation. Cependant, pour un gala, on peut former des équipes de trois, quatre, douze personnes, ou plus...mais plus le nombre de nageuses est élevé, plus il est difficile pour les nageuses d'être synchronisées !Pour élaborer un ballet, il faut essayer de former des équipes dynamiques, rapides et homogènes. Pour les compétitions, il faut faire en sorte que les nageuses soient dans les mêmes catégories d'âge. Le ballet sera représentatif du niveau d'ensemble. Les nageuses pourront ensuite rechercher leur musique et construire un ballet ensemble (certains clubs disposent de chorégraphes).
